Workshop Formats

Three ways to work
with what your family left.

Each format is a self-contained workshop — one session, three sessions, or five weeks — with a defined task, included materials, and a physical result to take home.

Approach

How Manorly workshops are structured

Each Manorly workshop is built around a task — something specific that can be started and finished within the session's timeframe. The educator does not lecture; they work alongside the participant, explaining methods as the work develops. The result is always a physical object: a sheet of printed bookplates, a bound writing piece, or a labeled archive system.

All three formats share the same approach to scope. They are educational and organisational workshops. They do not include personal advisory work, genealogical research, legal or financial guidance, or any activity that calls for a qualified specialist. The educator's role is to teach a skill and to accompany the participant through a structured task.

Session sizes are kept small — typically one to three participants for the bookplate and writing workshops, and one adult household for the archive program. This is not a commercial convenience but a deliberate decision: the work requires attention, and attention requires a small room.

Workshop 01

Family Bookplate Workshop

A focused single appointment in which participants design a small family bookplate to paste into family books or archive boxes. The educator helps with layout, a short Latin or vernacular motto, and a printed sheet of bookplates the participant takes home. All materials are included. The session is a design and printing workshop only — it does not include advice on family matters or any work that requires a qualified specialist. Suited as a gentle entry point to a longer archive project.

What the session includes

  • Layout guidance from the educator
  • Motto selection in Latin or your own language
  • Printing session on a small letterpress
  • Printed sheet of bookplates to take home
  • All paper and printing materials included

Session steps

  1. 01. Brief conversation about the family books or boxes the bookplate is for
  2. 02. Layout and motto design with educator guidance
  3. 03. Setting type and printing on the press
  4. 04. Trimming and packaging the printed sheet

Workshop 02

Family History Writing Workshop

A three-session writing workshop in which participants gather and write short family history pieces. The educator teaches structured prompts: choosing a memory, writing a careful draft, revising, and binding. Sessions are reflective and quiet, with paired prompts and a small in-class reading. The workshop is purely a writing workshop — it does not include personal or family advice or any work that calls for a qualified specialist. All materials are included.

What the three sessions include

  • Structured writing prompts for memory selection
  • Drafting and revision guidance across three meetings
  • A small in-class reading session
  • Hand-binding activity in the final session
  • Bound copy of your writing to take home
  • All paper, writing materials, and binding supplies included

Session progression

  1. S1. Memory selection — choosing what to write about and why. First draft written in session.
  2. S2. Revision — working on the draft with guided feedback. Small in-class reading.
  3. S3. Final revision, hand-binding, and completion of the bound family history piece.
